Working Principle

The HY-SRF05 Ultrasonic Sensor measures distance using the time-of-flight (ToF) principle.

  1. The controller sends a trigger pulse of at least 10μs to the Trig pin.
  2. The module automatically transmits an 8-cycle 40kHz ultrasonic burst.
  3. When the ultrasonic wave reflects from an object, the sensor receives the returning echo.
  4. The Echo pin outputs a pulse whose duration is proportional to the travel time of the ultrasonic wave.
  5. The controller calculates the distance using the following formula:

Distance = (Echo Time × Speed of Sound) ÷ 2

Since the sound wave travels to the object and then returns, the measured time is divided by two to obtain the actual distance.
